Germany: A Country with Many Japanese Residents and Opportunities

Germany: A Country with Many Japanese Residents and Opportunities

Germany is very different from Japan, both linguistically and culturally, and may be unfamiliar to many Japanese. Geographically, the two countries are also far apart, and it may be difficult to imagine a connection between them. However, a look at statistics reveals a surprising relationship between Japan and Germany. In the following, we will examine the status of Japanese residents abroad, and in particular, look at the current state of the Japanese community and business in Germany.

Which Countries Have the Most Japanese People?

As of October 1, 2023 (estimate of Japanese residents), Germany ranks 9th in terms of the number of Japanese residents. Excluding the United Kingdom, Germany has the largest population of Japanese residents in Europe.

Which German Cities Have the Largest Number of Japanese Residents?

By city, we can see that Japanese people are concentrated in Germany's larger cities. The following cities are all in the top 50 in the world for Japanese residents:

  1. Düsseldorf: 6,669
  2. Munich: 4,837
  3. Berlin: 4,068
  4. Frankfurt: 3,077

(For reference, the top five cities globally are Los Angeles with 64,457, Bangkok with 51,407, New York with 37,414, Shanghai with 37,315, and London with 32,487. These cities are well-known hubs for Japanese expatriates.)

How Many Japanese Companies Are Operating in Germany?

As of October 1, 2023, there are 1,947 Japanese companies operating in Germany. The distribution of these companies by city is as follows:

  • Munich: 744 companies
  • Düsseldorf: 637 companies
  • Frankfurt: 304 companies
  • Hamburg: 139 companies

Germany has the highest number of Japanese company offices in Europe, followed by the U.K. with 928 offices and France with 820 offices. This indicates a close economic relationship between Japan and Germany.

Conclusion

Germany stands out as the country with the largest Japanese population in Europe, which is evidenced by the significant number of Japanese companies entering the German market. Compared to highly competitive markets such as the U.S. and China, Germany can be seen as a blue ocean market for Japanese businesses. The strong economy, strategic location in Europe, and robust infrastructure make Germany an attractive destination for Japanese companies looking to establish a base in Europe.

I hope that cultural exchange and cooperation between Japan and Germany will deepen in the future, providing more opportunities for Japanese individuals and businesses to succeed in Germany.
